Welcome to soundmaven.com, an ads-free non-commercial music aggregator site, which tends to collect news, streaming tracks, music videos, album reviews and song lyrics in one convenient place. Some time ago MySpace shutted down imeem's API without bothering to give developers any warning. As we are making use of it, mp3 streaming is not working until MySpace pushes out an update. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Michael Jackson's Doctor Charged With Manslaughter
Posted on 2010-02-08
We finally know who sorta killed MJ. His personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, could get up to four years in prison. Or we could be releasing white doves into the sky in about 10 months. Read the full criminal complaint at CNN....
Ben + Vesper - "Singing Swords" Video (Stereogum Premiere)
Posted on 2010-02-08
Ben + Vesper are a married couple in Northern NJ. They have kids. They also write that they "have almost exactly the same hair color in the right light and definitely both have curlz in any light." They also "paint pictures and have cell phones to call their friends and work at home and eat meals and drink drinks and have a sign above their kitchen door that says "Love One Another," etc. These are simple facts that could apply to just about anyone in a relationship, anywhere, which is part of th...

Yeasayer/Warpaint @ Natural History Museum, Los Angeles 2/5/10
Posted on 2010-02-08
L.A.'s Natural History Museum invited Yeasayer to headline their most recent First Fridays event, because Yeasayer love playing museums. Like that Guggenheim show, the band was paired with some ascendant local talent -- in October it was Brooklyn's Tanlines, Friday night saw the slot filled by the previously loved ladies (and man) of Warpaint. Photographer Andrew Youssef reports the show was "extremely sold-out," which sounds about right. The Odd Blood support tour hits New York tonight for a pa...

Them Crooked Vultures, Crisis Of Conformity Play SNL
Posted on 2010-02-08
The supergroup's performance was overshadowed by Crisis Of Conformity, Fred Armisen and Dave Grohl's pitch-perfect hardcore punk spoof. Plus John Paul Jones had the line of the night in an unaired sketch (with ?uesto) about farts. Watch and learn. ...

Nneka - Concrete Jungle
Posted on Mon, 01 Feb 2010
"What is life without knowing that death comes?" asks the
Nigerian-German singer-songwriter Nneka Egbuna in "Mind vs. Heart."
If you're going to wax philosophical on a pop record, you better be
able to back it up with gravitas and some great music. Luckily,
Nneka has plenty of both. She has a husky, supple voice and is
equally adept at blasting out guitar anthems ("Focus") and
sauntering through neosoul rave-ups. She's clearly listened to
Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, but the production on
Concre...
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
Posted on Mon, 01 Feb 2010
The best song on this U.K. electro-pop group's 2008 disc
Made in the Dark was an ode to disco abandon called "Ready
for the Floor." The best one here is a marriage proposal called
"One Life Stand." Hot Chip's excellent fourth record shows how
compatible those sentiments can be. Frontman Alexis Taylor, a new
dad, hungers for commitment and ponders the big picture over
sweeping songs that set searching Yaz-like synth melodies to
elegiac house throb. The Chipsters lace their songs with
references...
Sade - Soldier of Love
Posted on Mon, 01 Feb 2010
Sade has a lot in common with AC/DC. Both have spent long and
glorious careers refining their signature sound, to the point where
it's basically one song with different titles. They wait years
between records, then deliver the same album they made last time
— which means it's unimpeachably excellent. Neither gets
caught doing anything stupid like trying a new hairstyle or making
a Balearic dubstep record. They stick to their strengths. And they
both sing about the tender emotions, from Sad...
Gil Scott-Heron - I’m New Here
Posted on Tue, 02 Feb 2010
"Standing in the ruins of another black man's life," intones Gil
Scott-Heron over muted electro beats on "Your Soul and Mine," his
baritone ravaged but unmistakable. The lines must resonate for the
veteran singer, activist and proto-rapper, who has spent the past
decade in and out of prison on drug charges. This comeback abandons
his signature soul jazz: There's a lone acoustic guitar on the
title track, a Smog cover; noir strings and electronics à la
Thom Yorke's The Eraser elsewhere. It's...
Yeasayer - Odd Blood
Posted on Tue, 02 Feb 2010
Like their Brooklyn neighbors Dirty Projectors and Animal
Collective, Yeasayer are pioneers of a scene that refuses to choose
between a sense of experimental adventure and pure pop pleasure.
It's a balance they're perfecting as they grow older: On their 2007
debut, they were freak-folkies with a knack for creating hot
Eastern-flavored grooves (check out the hallucinatory video for
"Wait for the Summer"). On their follow-up, they dive deeper into
electronics and big Eighties beats (literally: The...
